World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day Thursday 10 September is World Suicide Prevention Day. Spirit of Shankly are pleased to be working alongside LFC Foundation, Red Neighbours and Spion Kop 1906 in raising awareness of mental health. At any given time one in four of us is affected by mental health problems. Yet still there are too many who feel, or are made to feel, isolated, ashamed and worthless as a result. On average, 13 people in England take their own life every day - eight of them male. Suicide is the biggest killer among men under [...]

Help Is Here Update

Help Is Here Update Spirit of Shankly’s Help is Here campaign began shortly after the country went into lockdown five months ago as Covid-19 took hold. Over the past 20 weeks, we have provided more than 2,000 bags of food to the most vulnerable members of our community, and those working and risking their own health in the NHS and care homes. In doing this we have spent just short of £30,000. This has come from both union funds and individual donations from members and organisations who have supported our work. We would like to [...]

Champions of Everything and Everywhere

Champions of Everything and Everywhere On Wednesday, 22 July, Jordan Henderson will finally lift the Premier League trophy. Spirit of Shankly wish to congratulate him, the team, and Jürgen Klopp and his management team on this fantastic achievement. The downside of the victory is that fans won’t be inside Anfield to witness this, and any victory parade around the city will be delayed. But what a brilliant season it has been. Its unusual nature has led SOS to concentrate on community activities. We set up our Help is Here campaign alongside supporting and sharing efforts [...]

Help Is Here Video Update

Help Is Here Video Update Spirit of Shankly’s Help is Here campaign was started as a response to the difficulties faced by the most vulnerable during Covid-19. It was clear from the start of lockdown there were a lot of people in our communities without access to food through shielding, self-isolation, illness or hardship. In partnership with Morrisons, SOS began delivering food drops in April, to date we have delivered upwards of 2,200 parcels. We couldn’t have done any of this without the help of others: the taxi drivers, Tony, Frank, Philly and Phil, who make [...]

A Statement

SOS and Blue Union Joint Statement Spirit of Shankly‘s message has remained consistent throughout this crisis and that is: public health considerations must come first. We have worked in partnership with LFC, Merseyside Police and the City Council and all our messaging has been joint, always focusing on the safety of the public. We have seen some have chosen to ignore the social distancing guidance and risk public safety. We understand wanting to celebrate, but Covid-19 has not gone away. Jurgen Klopp has said, when it is safe to do so, we will work to [...]

Football returns to Merseyside

SOS and Blue Union Joint Statement Spirit of Shankly and the Blue Union welcome the news that games are to be played on Merseyside. Building on the community work both sets of fans continue to do throughout this pandemic, we are confident supporters will respect safety advice and avoid visiting stadia where games are taking place. We fully understand the importance of lockdown as a measure to control Covid-19 and encourage all fans to stay away from any stadium and avoid congregating in numbers. Join Renew [...]

SOS and Blue Union Joint Statement

SOS and Blue Union Joint Statement When it was announced players were to resume training, the focus on football returned to how the season should be concluded. For Spirit of Shankly and The Blue Union, our primary concern remains the number of cases and tragic deaths from Covid-19. Ideally competitive football would restart when it is safe for all – players, officials, matchday staff and the game’s main stakeholders, supporters. In reality this is unlikely. The consensus is that if the season is to be finished it will be behind closed doors without fans. Therefore [...]
