On Saturday morning, before Liverpool’s home game with Wigan Athletic, Spirit of Shankly hosted a very well attended meeting at the Sandon Pub – where the Liverpool Supporters’ Union was founded almost five years ago. The central focus of the meeting was a panel debate and members’ discussion around the ever increasing price of match tickets, particularly certain away fixtures. Joining the Union’s Jay McKenna on the platform were Bob Humphries and Les Wright from the Liverpool Supporters’ Committee.

Following well informed and illuminating presentations from the three platform speakers, the debate was opened up to members’ contributions from the floor. As usual, Union opinions weren’t slow in coming forward and the meeting heard a number of ideas and proposals drawn from members’ vast experience and their knowledge of successful European fan campaigns against high ticket prices.
The following resolution was passed with the overwhelming support of all present:
“Liverpool Supporters’ Union calls upon Liverpool Football Club to propose that a £25 flat rate away supporters’ ticket price be introduced for all Premier League matches and to publicly commit to introducing a £25 flat rate away ticket price at Anfield for supporters of all clubs who agree to reciprocate this arrangement.”
The Liverpool Supporters’ Union will now be liaising with Supporters Direct, the Football Supporters Federation and Football Supporters Europe to mobilise backing for this proposal as the first step in reversing the obscene upward spiral in the price of Premier League match tickets. Please watch out for further information and get involved as the campaign momentum builds.
