Chair’s Update – May 2020

Chair's Update May 2020 This past week should have seen the conclusion of the 2019/20 season and, as we hoped, with LFC crowned champions. The wait for our 19th title goes on, but we know the players have resumed partial training with a view to the season re-commencing in June. There is no certainty of this, but what is certain is that if it does, it will be behind closed doors. Spirit of Shankly have been in constant dialogue with LFC since the postponement. We have kept discussions open on the impact on fans, members [...]

Response to Mayor Anderson

Response to Mayor Anderson Spirit of Shankly are angered by comments made by Liverpool City Mayor, Joe Anderson. The Mayor has chosen to speak out on a hypothetical matter, namechecking Liverpool FC supporters without discussion with those fans or fan groups. There is no evidence to support the Mayor’s perception that Liverpool supporters will break any lockdown regulations and gather outside of Anfield should football be resumed and played behind closed doors. LFC, in their statement on the matter, refer to their engagement with supporters’ groups. SOS raised this issue with the club, back on [...]

Solidarity with Montevideo

Solidarity with Montevideo A few weeks ago, at the beginning of March, a group of Spirit of Shankly met with supporters of Uruguay’s @LiverpoolFC1915, based in Montevideo, who were visiting the city. It was the start of a friendship between our two sets of fans. We have just had news from them and it is wonderful to hear they too have set up a campaign to help others. Olla Solidaria (it translates literally as solitary cooking pot) is a scheme held each Monday through Saturday at Liverpool FC’s headquarters in Belvedere, a working-class neighbourhood in [...]

SOS Join Forces to Provide PPE

SOS Join Forces to Provide PPE Spirit of Shankly have joined forces with Fans Supporting Foodbanks and the Lydiate Learning Trust to help NHS staff and care workers. As part of our ongoing Help is Here campaign, SOS have donated £2,000 of union funds towards the production and distribution of much needed Personal Protection Equipment. We will also donate all new membership fees  – £10 for every new member who joins between now and August – to further boost manufacture in line with this project. This money will enable the production of more than 5,000 [...]

Open letter to Peter Moore

Open letter to Peter Moore Dear Peter You will have seen the overwhelmingly negative fan reaction to the club’s announcement on Saturday stating their intention to furlough a number of employees. You may well have seen our initial response to that announcement http://www.spiritofshankly.com/news/sos-priorities We understand this is essentially an employee/employer issue, but as LFC’s recognised official supporter representatives, we are concerned about the damage this is causing to our club’s reputation and values. In light of your announcement and before SOS comment further, we would like to ask and seek answers the following: Are you implementing [...]

LFC Furlough: A Statement

LFC Furlough: A Statement Spirit of Shankly want to make it clear that we have not refused to criticise the club. Our chair has been misquoted and misrepresented by a journalist on Twitter looking for clicks. On Saturday 4 April, LFC announced they are to furlough non-playing staff. We know no details, yet were asked for a statement. One was given in good faith saying for us the priority is LFC staff being paid 100% of their regular wage. During this crisis, many workers have lost or will lose their livelihoods. When it began, SOS [...]

Message from the Chair

Message from the Chair The COVID-19 virus is hitting the most vulnerable people in our communities hard. In addition to the obvious health-related impact, those without access to food either through self-isolation, in sickness or prevention, or hardship are suffering greatly. I am proud that our union, Spirit of Shankly, has played its part in trying to alleviate some of that suffering by delivering food bags to those most in need across Liverpool and the Wirral. Deliveries made on Monday, 30 March, took the total number of parcels distributed over the past four days to [...]

Message from the Chair

Spirit of Shankly have been contacted by some of our disabled supporters regarding the poor allocation of tickets from Barcelona for the Champions League fixture on 1 May. We have shared their details with LFC.
