Champions of Everything and Everywhere
On Wednesday, 22 July, Jordan Henderson will finally lift the Premier League trophy. Spirit of Shankly wish to congratulate him, the team, and Jürgen Klopp and his management team on this fantastic achievement.
The downside of the victory is that fans won’t be inside Anfield to witness this, and any victory parade around the city will be delayed. But what a brilliant season it has been.
Its unusual nature has led SOS to concentrate on community activities. We set up our Help is Here campaign alongside supporting and sharing efforts with Fans Supporting Foodbanks and Merseyside PPE.
The restart of the season brought the challenge of fans not being allowed into grounds. We understand how hard it is to stay away from Anfield, but also know it is one of the most deprived areas in Europe with significant health inequalities. To date, the overwhelming majority have heeded public-health advice and we hope supporters will continue to stay at home or in the pub and not put people at risk unnecessarily.
Thoughts are now turning to the new season. We are pleased the club have announced there will be no price increases for 20/21 – a real positive in these difficult times. We have also asked them to be sensitive to individual circumstances knowing fans may struggle to fund season-ticket renewals. They have said they will consider issues on a case-by-case basis and will also look at payment plans and season-ticket holidays.
The latest indication is that the earliest fans will be allowed back into Anfield is October. We don’t know how many that will be, or how fans will be selected, but we will work with LFC to ensure equity of access across all ticketing types.
Many of you will know that the club have embarked on the fan update for season-ticket holders. More than 8,000 have updated their details to date, but there have been problems with the system, especially at the launch. We urge all those who are having difficulty completing the process to contact the club in the first instance, allowing sufficient time for a response, and to raise any ongoing issues with us so we can feed them back to LFC.
Remember, the deadline for transferring season tickets to another name is 31 July and the final completion date is 14 August.
Our MC met last week. Among the topics discussed were the affiliation of the Merseyside Branch of the Liverpool Supporters Club and support for the Liverpool Womens Supporters Club (LWSC). Both were unanimously agreed and we look forward to working closely with them.
LWSC are facing a challenge with LFC to get women’s football acknowledged and respected to the level of the men’s team. We are happy to be working with them and the FSA both to support and highlight the struggles within the women’s game.
