June Update from the Chair
What an amazing end to the season – Campeones! A fantastic result in Madrid, followed by a phenomenal homecoming, with 750,000-plus turning out to see the Reds with the trophy.
The build-up to the final was busy for Spirit of Shankly as we campaigned for a greater share of tickets for supporters from UEFA, the Champions League sponsors and LFC. We also challenged the airlines and hoteliers over their cynical increase in prices.
We received positive media coverage, but little from those bodies that matter and could make a difference. Yet it seems our message has been heard. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is calling on clubs to contribute to a mutual fund to subsidise European fan travel, and is looking to review existing final ticket allocations.
While we won’t hold our breath, this gives something additional for the Football Supporters Conference to discuss when it meets in July. SOS will be in attendance and will share our experiences of European competition this past season, including the proposed price hike for our game away to Porto, and the definite price hike for the away fixture at Barcelona. I am sure fans of other clubs will have had similar experiences and together we will aim to make such issues high profile before next season’s competitions start.
Back to Madrid. We are aware a number of fans had issues with their tickets, less-than-helpful police and stewards resulting in some supporters missing the game. We are working with the Football Supporters Federation (FSF) and liaising with LFC over such matters in general and some individual cases.
As for next season, the fixtures are out. We will be watching carefully the impact TV changes will have on fan travel and will respond accordingly. Before that, the Reds will contest the Community Shield on 5 August, and SOS will have a coach to Wembley. Details will be posted here soon.
Finally, away from the football, we are working to improve our website, to make it more mobile friendly. Hopefully this will launch in the next few weeks.
