United front

Stop exploiting loyalty On Wednesday, 25 September, Spirit of Shankly and West Ham fan groups Hammers United and Old School Hammers held a joint protest before the Carabao Cup tie at Anfield. The protest against rising ticket prices and restrictions on concessions – under the Stop Exploiting Loyalty campaign – calls for fairer treatment for supporters. SOS Chair Paul Khan, MC members Gareth Roberts and Joe Blott alongside Hammers United’s Andy Payne discussed why it’s crucial fans unite in the fight for fairer terms. Letter to Billy Hogan

FSA and motions We have written to Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan regarding ticket pricing and dialogue with the club. Dear Billy, I hope this message finds you well and good to see you at the Fans Supporting Foodbanks collection point prior to the Brentford game. The fact that you continually take time out of your busy schedule on match day and donate is much appreciated Onto Spirit of Shankly business. At the recent Football Supporters' Association (FSA) AGM, Spirit of Shankly (SOS) proposed two key motions focused on coordinated action regarding ticket pricing and integrity [...]

Football Supporters’ Association AGM

FSA AGM SOS committee members Ian Byrne, George Bevan and Joe Blott joined fans and fan groups across football, including women’s football representatives, at the FSA annual general meeting at Wembley on 20 July.  The AGM was officially opened by Stephanie Peacock MP, the newly appointed Sports Minister. Of particular note was her and the Government’s commitment to ensuring the Football Governance Bill becomes an Act as quickly as possible. Once passed, an Independent Football Regulator (IFR) can be put in post to govern football properly. The delays in getting this legislation through parliament have [...]

Boycott Box Office Pay Per View

Boycott Box Office Pay Per View Spirit of Shankly are calling for a boycott of pay-per-view Premier League games starting with our fixture against Sheffield United on Saturday 24 October 2020. Why we are doing this We recognise supporters will be torn about following their team, but this is blatant exploitation. We are in the middle of the biggest pandemic and economic crisis for a generation, yet the Premier League and their clubs, except for Leicester City, Sky and BTSport have no trouble asking fans to pay £14.95 per game.  It is unacceptable. They have [...]

Project Big Picture: A Joint Statement

Project Big Picture: A Joint Statement The fans we represent are fortunate to support clubs that regularly secure the largest financial revenues in the Premier League. But all of us understand that football doesn’t work in isolation. It’s a family. It requires a fair share of resources to ensure that the Premier League is competitive to watch and that the lower leagues flourish as part of our national game. While the six clubs we support are widely reported to be the instigators of Project Big Picture, it is important we state very clearly that we [...]

PPV and Project Big Picture

PPV and Project Big Picture Over the past weekend, the Project Big Picture document leak and Pay-Per-View announcement (a disgraceful £14.95 per match) have again demonstrated, with zero formal engagement, a complete disregard for fans. The hedge funds and billionaire owners of our football clubs need to understand they are merely custodians. The actions of the club owners and TV broadcasters once more highlight the need for a supporter-led review of football governance. So far, Liverpool Football Club have remained silent on both of these issues and Spirit of Shankly have written asking them to [...]

Response to Mayor Anderson

Response to Mayor Anderson Spirit of Shankly are angered by comments made by Liverpool City Mayor, Joe Anderson. The Mayor has chosen to speak out on a hypothetical matter, namechecking Liverpool FC supporters without discussion with those fans or fan groups. There is no evidence to support the Mayor’s perception that Liverpool supporters will break any lockdown regulations and gather outside of Anfield should football be resumed and played behind closed doors. LFC, in their statement on the matter, refer to their engagement with supporters’ groups. SOS raised this issue with the club, back on [...]
