Remembering former players

A club of Liverpool’s stature has had many great players over the years, many of whom are  remembered and lauded today. But there are also many who are forgottten.

Kieran Smith, a lifelong Red, devotes his time to researching the history of the club and its players, incuding their final resting place. A few years ago, he found the weather-beaten grave of Alex Raisbeck in Anfield Cemetery. He tracked dowm some of Raisbeck’s relatives, who had a new headstone put in place in 2016.

More recently Smith discovered the unmarked graves of former manager George Patterson and player Bobby Robinson.

Attempts to find relatives of Patterson and Robinson have come to nothing, so Smith approached Liverpool City Council and Sarsfield Memorials. The Council have given their agreement, and Sarsfiled were happy to lend their expertise in making and placing both headstones for a nominal fee. The company have also pledged their assistance on future projects, given their importance not only to LFC’s history but that of the city itself.

Spirit of Shankly have donated £200 to a fund set up by Smith – he needs to raise £1400 for the headstones – and are happy to support all he does with regards to Liverpool’s past. If any one would like to donate, go to www.gofundme.com/liverpool-fc-graves.
