Solidarity with Montevideo
A few weeks ago, at the beginning of March, a group of Spirit of Shankly met with supporters of Uruguay’s @LiverpoolFC1915, based in Montevideo, who were visiting the city. It was the start of a friendship between our two sets of fans.
We have just had news from them and it is wonderful to hear they too have set up a campaign to help others.
Olla Solidaria (it translates literally as solitary cooking pot) is a scheme held each Monday through Saturday at Liverpool FC’s headquarters in Belvedere, a working-class neighbourhood in Montevideo.
Every day a hot meal is cooked and provided for those – individuals and families – most in need. At present, more than 200 meals are being served each day. The club are also involved, and two players are always on hand to help out with the cooking and serving.
Juan, one of those instrumental in setting this up, told SOS, “I’m proud to see both Liverpools having a similar attitude towards those in need. Belvedere is a truly working-class neighbourhood in Montevideo, just as Liverpool is a great working-class city in England.”
