Update on Burnley game

Feedback from LFC Spirit of Shankly have been in discussion with Liverpool FC, following members and supporters’ feedback after the Burnley game last Saturday, 21 August. Issues raised included NFC difficulties accessing Anfield, queues to get in to make it in time for kick-off, overcrowding on the concourses once inside and lack of staff and refreshments. Responses from the club are as following: They are continuing to develop, look at, the technology problems but they will not be returning to the old system of fan cards. They accept that the stewarding needs improvement, with better [...]

Feedback from Burnley game

Issues on Saturday Liverpool FC’s first home game of the season, in front of a full house for the first time in 18 months, was a positive 2-0 victory. A great start on the pitch, not so smooth off it, with many of Spirit of Shankly members reporting confusion and disorganisation. The new ticketing system had caused apprehension for fans following difficulties getting into Anfield at the two pre-season friendlies earlier in the month. SOS took all concerns to the club in the interim period, before the game with Burnley, and were assured new measures [...]

Anfield access update

Assurances in place Spirit Of Shankly representatives have had daily meetings with LFC officials following the difficulties accessing Anfield at the pre-season matches last Sunday and Monday. We discussed our concerns, those raised by our members and supporters and we have been assured by the club that the NFC system of entry will be fully functional for the Burnley game on Saturday 21 August. We asked that they have a robust plan in place should there be any issues on the day, again they assured us they do. We also asked that during this initial [...]

Ticket fiasco at Anfield

Fans Frustrated Today’s thrill of returning to Anfield turned sour for thousands of Liverpool FC supporters. For many, it was the first time they had been to the stadium in almost 18 months; for the club another chance to see their new system of entry in action before the first home game of the season on 21 August. The pre-season friendly against Spain’s Athletic Club was due to kick off at 4pm with capacity at 75%. It was clear more than two hours beforehand there were problems getting in as queues began to form. With [...]

Speaking to the Sun?

Letter to Wes Streeting MP Dear Wes Streeting We begin by saying it is great news to hear you are now cancer free, and we send you our best wishes for future health. We are however disappointed to read that you have written an exclusive article for The Sun. We find it astonishing that you, as a Labour MP, should choose this particular publication for an exclusive interview. You will be fully aware, that this ‘newspaper’ has been boycotted/banned here in Liverpool and many other parts of the country for the role it played in [...]

Reply from Julian Knight MP

Call for a Meeting Spirit of Shankly wrote to the Chair of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee Julian Knight MP earlier this month regarding the untrue parallels he had drawn between Hillsborough and chaotic scenes at Wembley before the Euro 2020 final. Knight had said on a TV news programme that “the crush was awfully reminiscent of Hillsborough”. SOS Chair Joe Blott wrote asking he apologise for the false narrative. Knight has now replied and a copy of his letter can be seen below. He has totally missed the point. MP for West [...]

Stop the false parallels with Hillsborough

Letter to Julian Knight MP Since the scenes of supporters rushing barriers, fighting and causing disruption before the Euro 2020 final at Wembley on Sunday 11 July, commentators have referenced similarities to what happened at Hillsborough. This is a completely false narrative and one that must be corrected. On 14 July, the Chair of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee Julian Knight MP appeared on the news again drawing untrue parallels.  Spirit of Shankly Chair, Joe Blott, has written to him asking that he apologise for his comments. Here is a copy of the [...]

Dominic Boyle

In Memory of Dominic Boyle Lifelong Liverpool supporter Dominic Boyle contacted Spirit of Shankly earlier this year. He wanted to make a contribution to help us with the work we do supporting our local community. Dom made a substantial donation to SOS, and at the same time told us he had a terminal illness. We were grateful a couple of us from the committee we were able to visit him at home and spend a little time with him, telling him more about what we do. We spoke about our shared love of LFC and [...]
