Letter to MPs

Football Governance Bill Spirit of Shankly have written to each of the 14 Merseyside MPs, bringing to their attention the recent focus on, and our objection to, playing a Premier League game overseas. We also asked that they support the Football Governance Bill and attend the discussion in parliament on Tuesday 3 September. This is a copy of the letter Dear [Name of MP] As we look forward to the first game of the new season at Anfield, on Sunday 25 August, the usual excitement is tinged with concern that our matchgoing traditions and heritage [...]

Football Supporters’ Association AGM

FSA AGM SOS committee members Ian Byrne, George Bevan and Joe Blott joined fans and fan groups across football, including women’s football representatives, at the FSA annual general meeting at Wembley on 20 July.  The AGM was officially opened by Stephanie Peacock MP, the newly appointed Sports Minister. Of particular note was her and the Government’s commitment to ensuring the Football Governance Bill becomes an Act as quickly as possible. Once passed, an Independent Football Regulator (IFR) can be put in post to govern football properly. The delays in getting this legislation through parliament have [...]

Pride is a time of celebration for the LGBTQ community and culture, and the march is an integral part of the free weekend festival. Shankly Cup 2024

“A brilliant day” The second version of the Shankly Cup took place on Saturday 8 June as eight Under-15 teams from Liverpool and East Ayrshire played for the title at The Barony Campus in Cumnock.  Two coaches left Liverpool early morning, stopping off at the Glenbuck Heritage site en route to pay respects to the great man and to meet the Shankly family. Barbara Alexander, Bill Shankly's niece, welcomed everyone, emphasising how much Shankly would have approved of and loved the idea.   Then it was on to the sports site and the games. [...]

Hillsborough Law Now

We need it now As another shameful scandal hits the headlines with the findings of the Infected Blood Inquiry, we are backing urgent calls for Hillsborough Law to be implemented in full in parliament. Yet again, decades-long systemic lying, denial, cover-up and gaslighting of victims by the state and relevant authorities have been exposed.  We have heard it before with the Hillsborough disaster, Grenfell, Post Office Horizon and now this.  More than 3,000 people died over decades, beginning in 1970, after contaminated blood products, imported from the US, were used to treat patients with blood-clotting disorders. According [...]

Ticket Increases

Why we oppose them Liverpool are pressing ahead with their plans to raise ticket prices for a second successive season, despite strong opposition. Spirit of Shankly, backed by a mandate from our members, and Spion Kop 1906 believe tickets are already too expensive. The cost of going to a game far exceeded the rate of inflation a long time ago and this latest rise is a worrying trend.  We have heard criticism of our resistance to the increase as “it’s just 2%” or it’s only “about season tickets”. It is not. Season tickets and individual matchday tickets [...]

Youtube talk: the price of tickets

The money game For the regular matchgoing supporter going to the game is expensive – next season even more so. And it's not just Liverpool fans, price hikes have been announced at every Premier League club, with the exception of Crystal Palace, as record-breaking revenues are reported. But there is a shift in where this income is coming from and the next TV deal will see media rights as a percentage actually diminish for clubs. So how will they fill the gap? Spirit of Shankly MC member Jay McKenna sat down with football finance expert Kieran [...]
