Message from the Chair

Message from the Chair The COVID-19 virus is hitting the most vulnerable people in our communities hard. In addition to the obvious health-related impact, those without access to food either through self-isolation, in sickness or prevention, or hardship are suffering greatly. I am proud that our union, Spirit of Shankly, has played its part in trying to alleviate some of that suffering by delivering food bags to those most in need across Liverpool and the Wirral. Deliveries made on Monday, 30 March, took the total number of parcels distributed over the past four days to [...]

Help Is Here

Help Is Here It’s tough for the healthiest, most robust of us in these extraordinary times, so imagine how hard it must be for the elderly, those at risk and the most vulnerable in our communities, those who struggle day-to-day under regular circumstances. Spirit of Shankly hope to make life a little more bearable by helping where we can. If any of our members know of family, friends or neighbours who would benefit from a food box being delivered to their door then get in touch. We will arrange the food, in conjunction with Morrisons, [...]

SOS reaffirm stance on rail seating debate

SOS reaffirm stance on rail seating debate Following a survey we organised in July 2017, our members and supporters voted overwhelmingly in favour of rail seating being introduced at stadiums across the country. They also backed supporters having the choice to sit or stand. Spirit of Shankly believe every club and their fans should be able to choose the model for their home stadium and work with the relevant authorities to meet prerequisite safety requirements. Liverpool supporters, more than most, understand the arguments for safety and the emotion of such a debate. We also know [...]

Derby day ‘advice’ is not consultation

Derby day 'advice' is not consultation We and The Blue Union refute the suggestion that we were advised by Merseyside Police on any pre-FA Cup discussions regarding fans. SOS were sent information, via LFC, after a course of action had already been decided. Advising of decisions is not consultation. We invite ACC Critchley to tell us how Merseyside Police shared their plans with us and how we responded. As for fans not being segregated - their statement was clear:  LFC fans are advised that Anfield Road will be *closed to home supporters* between the Shankly [...]

Derby Segregation

Derby Segregation As both Liverpool and Everton are gearing up for the FA Cup game on Sunday, supporters of both clubs have learned of the planned segregation outside of Anfield in the run-up to kick-off. Spirit of Shankly are totally opposed to this. There has been no consultation with SOS or Blue Union, despite both fan organisations asking to be involved in any planning prior to the fixture. The decision, reached by LFC, EFC and Merseyside Police will, we believe, make little difference to the control of fans. The closure of the Fan Park to [...]

Open letter to Merseyside Police, LFC & EFC

Open letter to Merseyside Police, LFC & EFC Dear Chief Constable, Mr Moore and Ms Barrett-Baxendale, On 12 December 2019, representatives from Spirit of Shankly, the Blue Union (and other Everton fan groups) met with representatives from Merseyside Police and both Liverpool and Everton football clubs.  This was a debriefing following the previous week’s Derby match at Anfield which had caused some problems for Everton fans accessing the stadium. Fan groups expressed their dismay at the lack of formal engagement, as has been the norm, prior to that game with just an email being sent [...]

Christmas Spirit? Not Here

Christmas Spirit? Not Here Liverpool FC will play Everton FC in the FA Cup Third-Round. When the tie, to be played on 5 January 2020 at Anfield, was announced Spirit of Shankly and Everton's Blue Union jointly asked that the clubs consider charging a maximum £20 per ticket. We hoped they would see it as a great gesture at this particularly expensive time of year for supporters. But no. The announcement for ticket prices – £31 to £50 in the Kop and Anfield Road – means away fans will be paying more than they would [...]

Final joy for fans

Final joy for fans Spirit of Shankly were upset to be told that some of our fans and members had been scammed. They bought tickets for flights to Doha, for the Club World Cup final, to then find there were no such tickets. On hearing the news we contacted representatives of the Qatar Supreme Committee - the authority we and LFC had worked with previous to the tournament. We asked if there was anything they could do to help. We are pleased to report they have. They have provided return flights for those affected. The [...]

Twenty’s Plenty for FA Cup

Twenty's Plenty for FA Cup LIverpool FC have again been drawn to play Everton FC in the Third Round of the FA Cup. The match is due to be played during the first weekend in January 2020. The tie comes on the back of the expensive Christmas period.
