The Spirit of Shankly Cup

The Spirit of Shankly Cup December 1 2019 marks the 60th anniversary of Bill Shankly agreeing to become manager of Liverpool FC. He took over two weeks later on December 14. To commemorate this anniversary and the great man’s legacy Spirit of Shankly and East Ayrshire Council are thrilled to announce the launch of the Spirit of Shankly Cup. A juniors tournament, it will bring together eight teams, four from Liverpool and four from East Ayrshire, where Shankly was born in the mining village Glenbuck in 1913. The inaugural event will be played in June [...]

Answers needed over Napoli policing

Answers needed over Napoli policing Before Liverpool FC’s match at Anfield against Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday, 27 November, photos were shared on social media showing large groups of Napoli supporters carrying weapons in Liverpool city centre. Later, as kick-off approached, there were a number of incidents of Napoli fans attacking LFC fans close to the stadium and outside of the Albert pub - the same location where Sean Cox was attacked and seriously injured before LFC’s game against Roma in 2018. Spirit of Shankly take our supporters safety seriously, and we will [...]

No Place for Racism

No Place for Racism Spirit of Shankly oppose all forms of racism. The club took swift action in the removal of the offensive banner that perpetuates racial stereotyping. Football isn’t separate from society, it is part of it and we all have a responsibility in ensuring people understand there is no room for racism. Simply banning people is not the answer. Education and reaffirming there is no place for discrimination in society has to form part of the solution. Join Renew Donate [...]

Qatar for the World Club Cup

Qatar for the World Club Cup LFC’s success in winning their sixth European champions title in Madrid, means they are now scheduled to contest the World Club Cup in December. In 2005, the last time the Reds played in this competition, they travelled to Japan. This year the six-team tournament is in Qatar. FIFA's decision to award the 2022 World Cup to the Gulf state has brought controversy and condemnation, with many fan groups and supporters concerned about migrant-worker deaths, workers’ rights and human rights, as well as being worried for their own safety and [...]

Boxing Day Late Late Show

Boxing Day Late Late Show The latest round of televised Premier League games has been announced and once again there is scant, if any, consideration given to match-going supporters and those employed at the stadiums. The traditional Boxing Day fixture is eagerly anticipated by fans all over the country – a chance to enjoy the game with family and friends during the festive period. But this late release of fixture dates and times means it has been impossible to plan. Liverpool’s Boxing Day match away to Leicester City has been earmarked for TV with a kick-off [...]

DCMS Report on Standing

DCMS Report on Standing Spirit of Shankly note the publication of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) review of standing at football matches and the headlines and conclusions drawn from it. The main conclusion drawn today focussed on there not being enough evidence for change and that further research is required. This is because clubs have never been tasked to record issues nor have supporters been asked to report issues in such a specific way. Two years ago, SOS canvassed the views of our members and Liverpool FC fans in general, including [...]

Victory for Common Sense

Victory for Common Sense Spirit of Shankly welcome the Intellectual Property Office’s rejection of Liverpool FC’s trademark application, and the club’s decision not to appeal against it. SOS were clear at the outset that the word ‘Liverpool’ is not for FSG or anybody else to own – it belongs to the city of Liverpool and its people. We should all be allowed to use it freely, however we see fit, without fear of legal letters dropping through our doors. LFC have enough legal remedies from their current  trademarks to address any issues they may have. [...]
